He Named Me ‘Malala’

Documentary Feature - Environment Design, Effects Animation, Cultural Consultancy

He Named Me ‘Malala’ is a feature documentary that takes a look at the events leading up to the Taliban's attack on Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai for speaking out on girls' education.

Working with director Davis Guggenheim and animation director Jason Carpenter along with the incredible animation & art department for ‘He Named Me Malala’, I had the opportunity to help re-create spaces and environments in Swat Valley based on Malala Yousafzai’s memories as a child.

Environment Design

Working within the painterly style set by the art director, this project allowed me to draw inspiration from my childhood in India as well as that of my parents and contribute to the wonderful & dreamlike environments in this seminal film.

Effects Animation

One of the most interesting design and animation challenges was to visualize and animate the ‘voice’ - whether it was the voice of Malala’s Father, Grandfather, or Malala herself. Named after Malalai of Maiwand (the national folk hero of Afghanistan who rallied local fighters against the British troops), Malala’s life and work exemplifies the power of one’s voice, creating an incredibly inspiring visual motif in the film.
